Expect Great Things from God
One of the greatest joys we get to experience here at CfaN is watching people God has called stepping into their calling. We’re surely seeing that happen through the CfaN School of Evangelism (SoE), our six-week intensive evangelism training. We recently graduated the fourth group of students in Germany, 73 students that included people from all over Europe and beyond.
Today, I want to show you some of the great reports we received from this SoE’s leadership team. Matheo and Lory Wentland, who shepherded this student group, told us how God’s work in the students’ lives began long before they arrived for Day One of the course.
God will make a way!
Lory shared: “It was beautiful walking alongside the students from the moment of their application. During the application interviews, they would share miracles they needed for their SoE preparations, like finances, family situations, or work logistics. Some of those challenges I would hear and just think, “How will God make a way?” But when they would tell us a couple weeks or months later how they ended up receiving their miracle, they and we were just blown away by what God did.
Just one example: there was a family who wanted to come with their three boys who were obligated to go to school. When they shared their plans with the school headmaster, he gave them a strong no. I felt strongly in my spirit that the family should be part of this school, so I really prayed for God to make a way even though I didn’t see a solution. So, when they wrote me that the headteacher had found a way to give the boys six weeks off school, I was amazed by that miracle.
How much you receive is up to you
Every month leading up to the school, we had a Zoom call. It humbled us as the organizers to see how willingly and in what numbers the SOE students showed up. Normally in a Zoom call, you don’t have many people attend due to time commitments and conflicts, but more than 75% of all accepted students were there every call. You could feel and see their excitement. We set the culture for the School of Evangelism from the beginning of the preparations. So, we emphasized family and told them to prepare their hearts in prayer and expectation. The program would be the same for everyone, but how much they would receive would depend on them and their hunger, their teachability, and their willingness to become part of a family and step into a new season.
When the students arrived and we hugged them for the first time, there was such a joy. Even the students were excited to greet each other because they had seen each other many times on the screen and were finally together in person. It was like a wedding feast! Everyone had been excited for months, and now finally everyone was able to experience it together in person. The very first week, we saw this family culture and intimacy manifest. We had proclaimed and preached it the month before, and now it was becoming reality.”
Expect great things from God
Caroline Rose, one of the CfaN staff who helped shepherd this group of students, shared:
“At the beginning of every School of Evangelism, there is a goal: ‘To convey to the students that they may expect great things from God.’ At the start of this SoE, it became clear this would not be too difficult, as this class began already full of enthusiasm and expectation, hungry to absorb every detail.
No matter who stepped onto the stage, this class consistently tried to take away as much as humanly possible. In the second week, Matias Toivainen spoke live from the mission field, and as a translator, I watched students weep quietly as he described the hunger of unreached people groups. Equally unforgettable was Christoph Domes’ teaching on the Holy Spirit, leaving us almost overwhelmed. Winfried and Gabi Wentland truly captivated the students, encouraging faith for the impossible.
City of Light – Berlin
God used these teaching moments to give the students a greater goal: not just to expect great things from God, but through their own lives. This faith, combined with practical outreach, launched them into two weeks of non-stop evangelism in Berlin, culminating in the “City of Light” event with Evangelist Lukas Repert (a four-day open-air evangelistic campaign). During Initiation, over 35,000 heard the Gospel, and 1,343 decided to follow Jesus!
Having had four weeks of classroom teaching, the students were eager to give their all in ‘Initiation’ – the practical outreach phase. Berlin is a busy and hectic city, with many different cultures, personalities, and even mental illnesses on display. Often the people on the street were social outsiders. There were also gangs, families, friend groups, people on their way to parties or work.
The need for preaching the Gospel was evident everywhere, and it was costly for the students to proclaim it every day. Reactions were mixed and not always positive – they were sometimes met with anger or hatred when preaching the Gospel. But the students were faithful and continued preaching. They saw the fruit when people gave their lives to Christ, but it wasn’t always easy. Yet they were willing to let God use them. Many of them were surprised themselves, never having thought of themselves as anything special or extraordinary, but they saw God move through them in ways they had never expected.
There were many memorable testimonies. For example, one Portuguese student met a suicidal man from her own region. Moments before, he had cried out in despair, then felt led to walk to Leopoldplatz, where the open-air campaign was happening. There, hearing the Gospel in his own language, he chose to give his life to Jesus!”
It is moving and exciting to see what God can do with surrendered lives! It’s our prayer that each one of these new CfaN graduates will go from strength to strength, seeing multiplication and fruit in their lives that they can barely imagine now.
