Day 37: Drink Deeply and Often

Survival experts tell us not to wait until we feel thirsty before we drink water—because by then, our bodies are already dehydrated. We are told to drink as much as possible to keep the hydration level of our bodies high. In severe cases of dehydration, doctors will prescribe an IV (Intravenous rehydration) for those who have become dangerously dehydrated.

Just as water is a critical source for our natural bodies, our spirits are dependent upon God’s spirit.“You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you. I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water” (Psalm 63:1). Just as the Holy Spirit is our comforter, He is also our refreshment and the life sustainer for our innermost being. Jesus said, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the scripture said, “From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water” (John 7:37-38).

Jude tells us as believers facing trouble, “You, beloved,” keep yourselves in God’s love by, “building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit” (Jude 20-21). Just as water rehydrates our physical bodies, praying in tongues edifies our spirit man. The verb, “edify,” means more than just “encourage.” The original word actually means “to construct, strengthen, or restore.” In other words, through speaking in tongues, the Spirit not only encourages our hearts, but also builds up our inner person. Just like an IV delivers fluid directly into a vein, bypassing the digestive system, praying in tongues enables us to bypass our minds and pray straight from our spirit! Praying in the Spirit is a direct connection to God’s hydrating power! “For one who speaks in a tongue, speaks not to men but to God…” (1 Corinthians 14:2a).

The Holy Spirit has a broad treasury of language for every kind of situation and emotion we may face. He’s got the answer to every problem known to mankind! When we pray in the Spirit, we move ourselves in closer proximity to the Lord to hear His voice and cooperate with His specific expression in any given moment. When God answers these prayers from our spirit, we receive measures of peace, joy, and strength that can come no other way. These are the virtues that fortify us from within, filling us with living water from the internal springs of His Spirit. We become spiritually healthy people, full of faith and spiritual vitality for others. Drink deeply and often of your internal resources by praying in the Spirit.
