Wet Feet

In Matthew 14:22–29 we read the story of how Peter walked on the water. It was early in the morning when Jesus came walking toward the disciples’ boat on the turbulent sea. When the disciples saw Him, they thought it was a ghost and they cried out in fear, but Jesus said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

“Lord, if it’s You,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to You on the water.”

“Come,” He said.

Notice that Jesus didn’t say, “Peter, come.” He simply said, “Come.” Do you realize what this means? Any of the disciples could have responded to that word and walked on the water. People often criticize Peter for taking his eyes off Jesus and sinking, but I admire him for being the only one willing to get out of the boat. You will never walk on water if you’re not willing to step out of the boat!

Some people seem to think that taking action demonstrates a lack of faith. On the contrary, faith without works is dead! Said another way, faith without action is dead! If you want to learn to swim, you are going to have to go ahead, step out of the boat and be willing to get your feet wet.
