The Sword of the Spirit

In Ephesians 6, verses 14-17 Paul talks about the “armor of God,” which includes the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. I want you to notice that we have no offensive weapon in this list.

Now you might disagree and point to the sword, but look carefully. The Word of God is not called “the sword of the Christian.” It is called the sword of the Spirit. In other words, it belongs to the Spirit. He alone can wield it properly.

The Scriptures were not intended to be studied from a purely intellectual and cerebral perspective like a textbook. In fact, this approach can even be counterproductive. This is why there are extremely disciplined students of Scripture, even professors and scholars, that are atheists and agnostics. These people have used the Bible to commit the sin of idolatry. The trinity does not consist of Father, Son and Holy Bible, but Father, Son and Holy Spirit. “The letter kills,” Paul says, “but the Spirit gives life” (2 Cor. 3:6, NKJV).

The Holy Spirit is not a doctrine or denomination or optional experience reserved for only a few Christians. He is a person – He is God in action on earth. If you want to know God and His word, you need the Holy Spirit, you need His presence, His voice, His help, His teaching and His guidance.
