Blessed Brokenness
Did you realize that Jacob, the great patriarch, had been forever changed after his famous encounter with the Angel of the Lord? He wrestled. He prevailed. But he also limped for the rest of his life. The limping Jacob was a broken man. He struggled all his life to get God’s blessing through deceit and manipulation. He’d stolen the blessing from his brother, Esau. He embezzled the blessing of his father, Isaac. But it was only after he’d been broken before the Lord that the Bible says he received the true blessing – God’s blessing (Gen. 32:29).
There’s no need to feel sorry for him. The broken Jacob was the blessed Jacob. This was the Jacob who became a mighty patriarch and the father of the nation that bears his new name, “Israel.”
At the Last Supper Jesus took the bread of Communion and said, “…This is my body, which is broken for you” (1 Cor. 11:24). The brokenness that He spoke of was the crucifixion and that brokenness would unleash the greatest power the world has ever known. The apostle Paul said in Galatians 2:20, “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me…” Paul understood that his brokenness would allow Christ to live through him. My friend, have you been left with a limp like Jacob? Are you scarred and broken? Don’t think for a moment that it disqualifies you. God wants to use you and your blessed brokenness for His glory.
